Philanthropy awards coming up in Cape Town

Inyathelo, the South African Institute for Advancement's annual Philanthropy Awards, will be held in Cape Town on 3 November 2009. The awards recognise those South Africans who have made a sustained personal contribution to benefit disadvantaged communities in South Africa.

Speaking ahead of the event, Dr Iqbal Surve, a social entrepreneur, noted that philanthropy in South Africa is very low as a priority. In an age where many companies invest millions of rands in corporate social investment (CSI) and corporate social responsibility (CSR), the role played by an organisation like Inyathelo is critical.

"Many potential philanthropists don't know how to get involved, but I can see that this is improving year on year. Organisations such as Inyathelo have contributed significantly towards creating a better environment and raising awareness about philanthropy," Surve said.

He has been on the judges' panel since the inception of the awards two years ago and believes that the awards go a long way in raising awareness on the work done by philanthropists in the country. "As judges, we look at the outstanding contributions and the direct impact on the recipients. Giving money is one thing but time is another.

"We encourage philanthropists to participate in these awards, as it is an opportunity to have their stories told and in this way we can inspire other budding philanthropists.

"The response to this year's nominations has been good and the calibre of nominees excellent, I'm looking forward to seeing an increase in nominations for next year's awards," he concluded.
