Call for Social Entrepreneurship 2008 nominees

Ernst & Young and the Schwab Foundation for Social Entrepreneurship seek to recognise and reward leading South African social entrepreneurs with the South African Social Entrepreneur Award, which forms part of Ernst & Young's World Entrepreneur Awards Programme. Deadline for the nomination process for participants to enter this award is 4 April 2008.

Social entrepreneurship has played a pivotal role in developing South Africa's second economy, which ultimately contributing to the country's GDP and helping to shake off the donor dependency syndrome by creating employment.

Finalists in the Social Entrepreneur category of the World Entrepreneur Awards Programme will be invited to attend the Social Entrepreneurs Africa Roundtable on 3 June and to the World Economic Forum on Africa, 4 – 6 June. The winner will also gain access to the Schwab Foundation's global network providing unprecedented opportunities to engage global decision makers from the public, corporate, media and academic sectors to strengthen and expand their models.

When selecting the members for its network, the Schwab Foundation applies a number of criteria that together characterise an outstanding social entrepreneur. These include whether the product or service is sustainable, innovative and easily replicable, with a direct positive social impact. The finalists will be announced in May, with the winner being announced at the Ernst & Young World Entrepreneur Awards in November.
