The easy-to-install Garmap for Mobile (Online) application gives you access to Garmin services directly on your mobile phone for a R59/month subscription fee.

Renowned for its GPS consoles, Garmin offers this software product online primarily to SA users.

Garmap for Mobile (Online) is a complete navigation offering for entry-level to midrange GPS-capable phones. As an online appliance it automatically updates the latest map data directly to your handset.

The plus side is you can use it for as long as you need it. A 12-month package (for SA) costs R549; the three month subscription is R159. There's a free 30-day trial before buying one, from its online Web store. The application is available online for download onto almost all new smartphone handsets. To be sure yours will work check the website.

With Garmap for Mobile, 3D maps and turn-by-turn voice prompts guide you to your destination.

Garmap for Mobile also offers the ability to share locations and routes via SMS, Twitter and Facebook; Wikipedia; a speed-camera alert; and real-time traffic alerts — which requires a separate subscription.

The uncomplicated interface allows you to plan trips (and get alternative routes), get live traffic reports and search for hotels, petrol stations and restaurants.

However, the traffic maps available in SA are only for major metropolitan areas.
