Vodacom Color adds some colour to Students' Day

Students from the University of Cape Town (UCT) were treated yesterday, 5 August, to a rather unique and exciting brand experience - a human vending machine. The 4m x 2m, bicycle-powered machine was brought onto the campus by Vodacom Color - the newly launched youth-specific brand from Vodacom.

A team of promoters were on campus yesterday to dish out branded promotional disks and engage with the students about what they needed to bring with them today in order to 'convert' to Vodacom Color if they hadn't already done so. The temptation to swap over was heightened today with the added incentive of a mystery prize from the vending machine. Students who opted to change to Vodacom Color were taken to the activation site where, after registering for the service and RICAing their new SIM cards, they were given an "outer coin" that, together with the promo chip formed a token to be used in the vending machine.

Once the token was dropped into the specially designed slot, music was pumped through a chamber housing a cyclist and bike connected to an enormous wheel laden with prizes. The cyclist's pedalling caused the wheel to spin and once the music stopped a prize was dispensed. Prizes ranged from free airtime and fragrances to laptops and Wiis and were doled out by the vending machine.

According to Nozipho Mlambo, Vodacom Color brand manager, "With the human vending machine we wanted to bring across the concept that with Vodacom Color you get more value, more flexibility, more freedom and more fun - basically just more, and this was a fresh and fun way to do so".

'Awesome, dude

When asked what they thought about the day's event, almost all of the students said that it was 'awesome' and 'cool'. One student, Luqmann Mooradd, said, "This is amazing - I've always been a Vodacom supporter and now I'm excited to see this change in the Vodacom scene".

"Keep a lookout for more human vending machines that will be popping up on university campuses around the country", concludes Mlambo.
