South African sportswriter Donald McRae has become the first writer ever to win the William Hill Sports Book of the Year Award, the leading book award in the field of sports writing, for a second time.

McRae won the £15 000 award for In Black & White, a story of the friendship between two 1930s US sporting legends, boxer Joe Louis and athlete Jesse Owens.

He first won the award in 1996 for Dark Trade, an account of the tragic side of boxing. He was also nominated for the award in 1998, for Winter Colours, his account of SA rugby.
