Record Loerie awards Saturday
After a record number of entries and a strong set of finalists, the elite Loeries judging panel - comprising over 100 industry specialists - has awarded the Loeries, the industry's highest accolade, to 162 deserving winners. At Saturday night's award ceremony in Margate, there were three Grand Prix awarded to Grid, Lowe Bull Cape and Ogilvy SA. Ogilvy was the winner on the night with a total of 15 awards.
Ogilvy SA winner of Grand Prix for Outdoor Media
There were in total 17 Gold, 46 Silver, 86 Bronze and 10 Craft Gold. The pinnacle of The Loerie Awards, the Grand Prix, was awarded to the following three agencies on Saturday evening: Grid Worldwide Branding and Design for the Lulu Identity Programme ‘Made for Today' in the Communication Design Category; Lowe Bull Cape for the Independent Newspapers ‘Cape Times Hiroshima, 911, JFK, Soweto Uprising' Campaign in the Advertising Newspaper Category; Ogilvy South Africa for the Eskom ‘Save' Outdoor Media billboard in the Advertising Category.
Grid winner of Grand Prix – Brand Identity
Ogilvy South Africa in total walked away with one Grand Prix, one Gold, one Silver, 11 Bronze awards and one Craft Gold - a total of 15 awards. They were followed by The Jupiter Drawing Room (South Africa) with three Silver and nine Bronze - a total of 12 awards. Net#work BBDO followed closely in third place with three Gold, two Silver, four Bronze and two Craft Gold making, a total of nine awards.
Student awards
In the student awards a total of 45 statues was awarded, and the school that walked away with the most statues was Vega The Brand Communication School with three Gold, three Silver, 12 Bronze and 1 Craft Gold with a total of 19 awards. This was followed by the AAA School of Advertising with four Silvers and six Bronze with a total of 10 awards. In third place was the Red & Yellow School with three Silver and 1 Bronze with a total of four awards.
Marketing excellence
Fred Withers from Exclusive Books was honoured with the inaugural Marketing Excellence and Innovation Award. The award is to an individual in recognition of their achievements over an extended period of time. Withers was praised for his personal involvement not only in the last two years but many years prior to that and has been an active driver of the growth of a uniquely South African brand.
Says Wingwing Mdlulwa, chairman of The Loerie Awards, “I feel that every area of advertising, brand communication and design has been truly represented at this year's awards. The judges have done a stellar job in recognising and rewarding creative excellence and choosing deserving winners who truly reflect the Loeries core values of fostering creativity in the African region. Now all that there is left to do is celebrate and toast the deserving winners,” concluded Mdlulwa.
