This October, Spar’s water bottles carry a hidden breast cancer message

Developed in support of Cancervive, the campaign changes one in every 12 caps on Spar 500ml Still Water bottles to pink, representing the statistic that one in 12 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime.
The initiative combines packaging, in-store visibility and a purchase-linked contribution, bringing the awareness message into an everyday retail environment.
Throughout October, every purchase of Spar 500ml Still Water contributes towards Cancervive’s cancer awareness, education and community support initiatives, regardless of whether the bottle has a pink cap.
Turning the product into the message
The campaign uses the bottles, their shadows and pink caps to create imagery that evokes breasts, accompanied by the line: “You noticed. That’s a start.”
The creative is designed to make shoppers pause, while the pink cap carries the campaign beyond traditional advertising and onto the retail shelf.
“We wanted to create a campaign that gives people a reason to stop and engage with a subject that can be difficult to talk about,” says Mpudi Maubane, head of PR, communications and sponsorship at The Spar Group.
“By using a familiar product in an unexpected way, we can bring the conversation closer to everyday life and connect that awareness with support for Cancervive’s work.”
For retailers and FMCG brands, the campaign demonstrates how packaging can become a media channel in its own right, using an existing product to communicate a message at the point of purchase.
From purchase to participation
The campaign extends beyond the shelf across participating Spar stores, Spar2U and the retailer’s social media platforms, supported by public installations, media engagements and creator content.

The combination of product, retail and digital touchpoints is designed to turn awareness into participation, with shoppers able to contribute simply by purchasing a product they may already have in their baskets.
It also gives Spar Private Label an opportunity to connect its product portfolio with a broader community initiative, while building visibility and brand affinity around a cause with personal relevance for many consumers.
Cancervive uses survivor-led education to help communities understand cancer, encourage early detection and access support.
“Awareness can help people recognise changes in their bodies, seek medical advice and have conversations they may otherwise avoid,” says Marlene Notje, CEO and founder of Cancervive.
“This campaign allows us to bring the message into everyday spaces and remind people that nobody should face cancer alone.”
The campaign runs until 31 October 2026 at participating Spar stores and on Spar2U.
