Lip pigmentation forms when UV rays reach the melanin-producing cells in the lips and trigger them to produce more pigment as a defence.
Over time, this shows up as dark patches or an uneven, blotchy tone.
It is more common and more visible on melanin-rich skin, which makes it a bigger concern in South Africa than in many other markets.
SPF measures protection against UVB rays, which cause sunburn.
It does not measure UVA protection, which is what drives pigmentation and long-term skin damage.
UVA protection is measured separately, graded on a scale from one to four plus signs.
A lip product with SPF30 and a high grade of UVA defence is protecting against both sunburn and pigmentation, which is why the two ratings matter together, not on their own.
Lip skin differs fundamentally from facial skin.
It lacks oil glands found elsewhere on the skin, so it is more prone to drying out and chapping.
The outer layer is much thinner and contains fewer protective layers, and lips lack the glands that help maintain the barrier.
This also means lips have less natural defence against UV, which is part of why they pigment so easily.
As a result, they lose water faster and are more sensitive to dry air and sun.
This is where lip care is changing. Consumers no longer want just a topper.
They want hybrids that give colour plus care, which is why many brands are now adding peptides and oils to glosses so they double as treatments.
Few, however, are addressing pigmentation directly.
Skin Functional recently launched its Lip Protector SPF30 collection, a fragrance-free, silicone-free, alcohol-free, cruelty-free range made in South Africa and tested for allergies and toxicology.
Brand founder and CEO Shannon Dougall says that Skin Functional created the collection to fill this gap.
“Most lip products in South Africa offer colour, and some offer SPF, but almost none address pigmentation directly. That is the difference with this range,” she says.
“It carries a PA++++ rating (the highest available UVA rating), alongside SPF30. That combination is what actually prevents pigmentation from forming, not just sunburn.”
The range includes five tints — Blush, Rose, Berry, Mocha, and Translucent — edited to suit different skin tones.
All five share the same broad-spectrum SPF30 and UVA protection base, plus a treatment core of Palmitoyl Tri-Peptide, Vitamin E, and coconut oil.
“Lips are skin too, and in South Africa they are exposed every day. We did not want another gloss that adds shine for an hour,” she adds.
“We wanted one product that gives colour you will actually wear, with sun protection and peptide support built in, so pigmentation protection happens while you wear it, not as an extra step.”
“South African lips are under pressure all day long, even when we are not at the beach,” says Shannon Dougall, CEO and founder of the brand.
“Driving, walking to the shops, sitting near a window, being in an aircon.”
“Lip skin does not have oil glands to trap moisture, and it has less protective pigment, so water leaves it faster.
“But the bigger issue is pigmentation.
“UV exposure builds up on the lips the same way it does on the rest of the face, and without daily protection, that shows up as dark patches and uneven tone over time.”
The new Lip Protector SPF30 comes in a 10ml tube and retails at R180 each, available at all major retailers and online.
