PepsiCo’s Mirinda brings 'Smile Delivery Service' to Uganda

As consumers navigate rising living costs, higher petrol prices and an increasingly negative news cycle, brands are looking for ways to create more meaningful moments of connection.

For Mirinda, that has meant taking its global Sip a Mirinda, Spread the Smile platform beyond advertising and into the real world with what it describes as the world's first Smile Delivery Service.

Created in partnership with Glovo, the activation allowed consumers to nominate someone they care about and send them a personalised surprise delivery featuring a Mirinda, a personal message and an unexpected gift.

The initiative launched in Kampala, Uganda, with a target of facilitating 2,000 surprise deliveries over four weeks.

Rather than simply communicating a message about positivity, the activation gave consumers a practical way to participate in it – turning a brand promise into a physical experience delivered directly to someone's door.

From brand message to brand experience

The Smile Delivery Service forms part of Mirinda's broader global platform, which is built around the idea that small acts of kindness can create meaningful moments of positivity.

Consumers participating in the Ugandan activation could nominate a recipient through the campaign channel, personalise a message and arrange for Glovo to deliver the surprise.

For Pearl Kitimbo, brand manager at Mirinda Uganda, the value of the activation was in making the brand's positioning something consumers could experience rather than simply see in advertising.

“Send A Smile brought the Mirinda promise to life in a deeply human way. We set out to make Mirinda more than a drink, but a simple trigger for moments of joy,” says Kitimbo.

“Seeing people nominate friends, share messages and create smiles showed us the power of that idea. For us, the most rewarding part has been seeing a strategy move from a campaign idea into something people could genuinely experience and pass on.”

Making positivity participatory

Marius Vorster, marketing director for Foods & Beverages SSA at PepsiCo, says the activation reflects changing expectations around consumer engagement.

“People are living through a time where there is no shortage of things competing for their attention, and often, much of what they see each day can seem or feel overwhelmingly negative,” says Vorster.

“At Mirinda, we saw an opportunity to create something different. The idea behind Sip a Mirinda, Spread the Smile was not simply to communicate a message about positivity, but to make positivity something people could actively participate in and share with others.”

That approach puts participation at the centre of the campaign. Instead of positioning the consumer as the audience for a brand message, Mirinda made them part of the mechanism through which the message was delivered.

“When we looked at the role Mirinda can play in people's lives, we kept coming back to a simple truth: small gestures matter,” Vorster says.

“A message from a friend, a thoughtful surprise or an unexpected act of kindness can completely change the trajectory of someone's day. We wanted to create a platform that celebrates those moments and makes them easier for people to create for one another.”

Innovation beyond technology

The campaign also highlights a broader interpretation of innovation, where the novelty lies less in the technology itself and more in how existing platforms and services are combined to deliver a brand experience.

“Innovation isn't only about technology or new media channels. Sometimes innovation is about finding a new way to bring a brand idea to life,” says Vorster.

“The Smile Delivery Service was designed to take something intangible, a smile, a good feeling, a moment of connection, and make it tangible. That is what makes this platform so exciting.”

The partnership with Glovo provided the infrastructure to turn a digital nomination into an offline interaction, linking consumer engagement with delivery and personalisation.

A platform with potential beyond Uganda

While the first Smile Delivery Service activation was launched in Uganda, Mirinda sees potential to develop the broader Sip a Mirinda, Spread the Smile platform in other African markets.

The brand says any future executions would need to reflect local cultures and consumer contexts rather than simply replicate the Ugandan activation.

“Africa is home to some of the world's most vibrant, optimistic and resilient communities,” says Vorster. “While every market has its own culture and context, the desire to connect with others is universal.”

“We see this as the beginning of a much bigger journey for the Sip a Mirinda, Spread the Smile platform, and we are excited about the opportunities to bring the idea to life in new and locally relevant ways across selected African markets in the future.”

For Mirinda, the Smile Delivery Service illustrates how a purpose-led brand platform can move beyond communications to create an actual consumer behaviour: nominate someone, send them something unexpected and create a moment of connection.

In an increasingly crowded marketing environment, the activation is ultimately built around a simple proposition – that sometimes making someone's day better starts with a small gesture, delivered at the right moment.
