Apple unveils first foldable iPhone with iPhone Duo

Apple has unveiled the iPhone Duo, its first foldable iPhone, introducing a new design with a 7.6-inch inner display and a 5.4-inch outer display.
Apple unveils first foldable iPhone with iPhone Duo

The device is the thinnest iPhone Apple has produced when opened and uses a precision hinge designed to support the centre of the display when unfolded. The inner display has a nano-texture finish intended to reduce glare and minimise the visibility of the crease.

When closed, the iPhone Duo has a 5.4-inch outer Super Retina XDR display, which Apple says provides 90% of the screen area of the iPhone 18 Pro. When opened, its 7.6-inch inner display is 50% larger than the iPhone 18 Pro Max.

Both displays support ProMotion, Always On and up to 3,000 nits of peak outdoor brightness. Apple says the device will also support Apple Pencil with USB-C later this year.

Built around a foldable design

The iPhone Duo uses a grade 5 titanium enclosure, with Ceramic Shield protecting the back and Ceramic Shield 2 on the front. Apple says the front Ceramic Shield has three times better scratch resistance than the previous generation.

The device has an IP68 rating for splash, water and dust resistance. Its hinge contains more than 100 components, while the internal structure includes support ribs intended to increase stiffness.

The folding display uses a scratch-resistant coating and nano-textured cover layer, with high-strength glass above and below the display panel.

New camera features

The iPhone Duo has a 48MP Fusion Main camera with an integrated optical-quality 2x Telephoto capability, as well as a 48MP Fusion Ultra Wide camera.

The main camera supports zero shutter lag and 4K video recording at 120 frames per second in Dolby Vision. The device also introduces several camera features that make use of its folding design, including Smart Take, Duo Preview and Duo FaceTime.

A new FaceTime camera is positioned beneath the inner display. Apple says users can also use the outer display to preview photographs taken with the rear cameras.

iOS 27 and AI features

The iPhone Duo runs iOS 27, which Apple has adapted for its two-display design.

The software places some controls and navigation elements along the side of the display and allows users to run two apps side by side using Split View. Users can also open two windows of the same app, such as Safari, and save pairs of apps for later use.

The device also includes Apple Intelligence and a new Siri AI experience, which Apple says can use personal context to search across apps, answer questions about on-screen content and take actions.

Apple says Siri AI is rolling out in beta with iOS 27.

A20 Pro and battery

The iPhone Duo is powered by Apple's A20 Pro chip, paired with a custom vapor chamber for thermal management.

Apple says the device delivers up to 35% better sustained performance than the iPhone 17 Pro. The A20 Pro has a six-core CPU, seven-core GPU and dual 16-core Neural Engine, with Apple claiming CPU performance up to 20% faster than the A19 Pro and GPU performance up to 40% faster.

The phone uses a dual-battery architecture, with one battery on each side of the device. Apple claims up to 31 hours of video playback using the inner display and up to 44 hours using the outer display.

Pricing and availability

The iPhone Duo starts at $1,999 in the US and is available with 256GB, 512GB, 1TB and 2TB storage options.

Pre-orders open on 16 October, with availability beginning on 23 October in more than 70 countries and regions. Apple says the device will become available in a further 28 countries and regions from 30 October.

The iPhone Duo will be available in star white and night sky.
