Leonel Da Silva
I went to the university of Pretoria and obtained a Bcom degree with majors in business management and marketing management in 2013. I moved onto the Institute of Marketing Management Graduate School of Marketing, (IMM GSM), where I completed my BPHIL Honours in Marketing Management in 2015. There I wrote a thesis titled The Study of Online Marketing and Social Media Being a Favorable Tool for Brand Awareness or Future Product Sales. It was a study conducted on a company in the start-up industry.

Show profile Hide profileDuring my time in the tertiary sector and completing my studies I worked part time jobs. These jobs included waitering at restaurants; interned during university holidays as a marketing intern at Chartered Wealth Solutions; brand ambassador for BMW, Samsung, and Audi at Brand Soldiers. Extensive learning sessions were compulsory to attend so that to fully understand the key selling points of the product, improvements, latest technologies, functions, product value, brand value to name just a few. This was essential for every new product launch. These part-time jobs taught me how to link business theory with business practical. I was a part of the launches of a product and got an exposure and understanding of brand management and the interaction in the market. It taught me client relations from an early stage in my career and allowed me to communicate the brand or product message well and create a memorable interaction. I was exposed to many situations where your thinking skills had to be sharp and the use of logic was crucial.
I continued to work while I completed my honours year at an insurance firm called Platinum Life. I worked as a representative who engaged with policy holders about new marketing material and introduced the company and product to potential new clients who were referred by existing clients. During my time at Platinum Life I received 2 Excel certificates of completion from an incentive based programme for its employees to increase their skills. I learned time management, organization skills, and self-motivation as well as sharpen the skills learned in my previous roles in my part time work. I gained corporate work experience as well as leadership skills after being appointed a team leader.
From here I was selected as the operations manager for a digital and software development company, The Digital Academy. This role was in a company that was about to complete its 2nd year of entry into the market which is a vital time in the start-up life cycle. It exposed and gave me experience as well as built skills that helped in managing all departments associated in the daily functions of a company. I over-see HR; financials such as pay roll and running costs of the office; contracts; monthly and quarterly reports; compliance; client relations and management; supplier management; customer management; events as well as staff well-being. I learned to understand tech language while interacting with the developers and trying find solutions with technical products. While being at The Digital Academy I have presented and incorporated processes that brought in an income and processes that decreased expenses of the company. I have gained a considerable interest in this creative, innovative, and exciting industry and wish to continue my career in it and make an impact in the operations or marketing roles.
