Ugly Betty's South African twist

Salma Hayek and ABC's hot new hit 'Ugly Betty' was recently nominated for two Golden Globe Awards including best television series comedy or musical. The hugely successful series was also nominated for several Screen Actors Guild Awards including best supporting cast. Ugly Betty has solid indirect South African ties: South African actor Stelio Savante is a recurring guest star who has just completed shooting his ninth and 10th episodes.

He plays the role of Steve, a shady hitman hired to dig up info by the owner of MODE fashion magazine where Betty works. But in one of the more intruiging storylines of the show Steve gets buried alive in a coffin and manages to escape. After working opposite Alan Dale almost exclusively in his first eight episodes, Stelio is now filming scenes with Vanessa Williams and Rebecca Romijn.

While he was shooting a supporting role on Hollywood film 'My Super Ex Girlfriend' in New York, his lead role in independent film 'The Coldest Winter' went a long way to ensure the film was awarded best feature at the Hollywood DV film festival. His lead role in Off Broadway show 'Arabian Night' received rave reviews, including one from the New York Times.
