Newspapers ABC Q1 2018: Some positives for press

Despite a decline of 4.4 % on the prior year, the Audit Bureau of Circulation (ABC) total newspaper circulation increased by 0.8% on the previous quarter, bucking the prior quarter's trend of overall declines.

Daily Newspapers increased by 0.4% on the previous quarter, but together with Weekly Newspapers declined on the prior year. Daily Newspapers declined by 15.7% on the prior year and Weekly Newspapers by 12.5% on the prior year and by 1.4% on the previous quarter.

Weekend Newspapers remained static compared to the previous quarter. Dailies declined by 15.7% on the prior year and Weekend Newspapers declined by 9.2% on the prior year.

Dailies

Only Citizen showed positive movement over the previous quarter and the prior year, moving up by 3.8% and 4.3% respectively. While Isolezwe gained 8.6% on the previous quarter, together with the Daily Dispatch, which gained 3.4%, both lost nearly 10% on the prior year. Isolezwe lost nearly 9.5% over the prior year, while Daily Dispatch lost 9.4%.

Weekend Argus gained 0.6% over the prior quarter and decreased by 1.6% over the prior year. Sunday Tribune increased by 0.3% over the prior quarter and decreased by 9.6% over the prior year.

Local newspapers

These increased by 2.3% the previous quarter, but declined by 6.0% on the prior year. A number of local newspapers saw increases over the prior quarter in excess of 10% – The Lowvelder Tuesday (16.3), The Lowvelder Friday (14%), Rustenburg Herald (11.4%) and Witbank News Friday (10.7).

Of these Rustenburg Herald also saw a 20.9% increase change over the prior quarter. The Lowvelder Friday also increased over the prior year, by 1.9%. Witbank News Friday lost 7.4% and The Lowvelder Tuesday lost 3.4%
