Halaal certification on the cards
"The CGCSA facilitated a highly successful meeting with the South African National Halaal Authority, the National Independent Halaal Trust, the Islamic Council of South Africa and the Muslim Judicial Council," explains Haroon Kalla.
An accord was signed by these parties in February this year, recognising each party's competence and authority to issue halaal certificates. This was followed up by an Interim Code of Conduct that was signed in April.
Extensive debate and discussion resulted in general consensus on a revised interim code of conduct that was concluded on 11 August 2005 which will now be separately reviewed by all participating bodies.
"We trust that by 12 September, at the occasion of the World Halaal Congress, a full formal announcement of its acceptance by all parties will be made," says Kalla.
Once this has happened, the CGCSA will facilitate the development of a set of halaal certifying standards, to ensure ongoing consumer confidence.
