Ten things I love about São Paulo

Contributing editor, Brian Berkman asks Rolf Steiner, owner of Rhulani Safari Lodge in the Madikwe Game Reserve, about the 10 things he loves about São Paulo, Brazil - his home for many years.

1. Dinner in the Restaurant Figueira Rubaiyat

This restaurant is a real attraction not only because it has the best quality of meat from their own farm but also because this restaurant is under an impressive fig tree which creates a unique atmosphere.

2. MASP - Museum of Art São Paulo

This museum is actually an architectural highlight and must be seen from outside. Travellers should ask themselves the question, how does the static of this construction work?

3. Museum of Soccer (Museu do futebol)

Brazil is the country of soccer. The good thing about this museum is that it is a great attraction for all people who love soccer and also fun for children.

4. Avenida Paulista

It is the most famous Avenue of São Paulo where you see all kinds of buildings. A walk along this avenue must be part of a Sao Paulo visit. The MASP is also on this street.

5. Soccer Game - Corinthians

Go to a soccer game, a great attraction in Brazil. This soccer stadium was built and used for the Soccer World Cup 2014 (the semifinal between Argentina and Holland took place here).

6. Edificio Italia

In the centre, this building is a highlight. Not just because of the construction, but because it probably has the best view of São Paulo from the top. I also recommend you have a drink there in the beautiful rooftop bar.

7. Park Ibirapuera (Parque Ibirapuera)

In this busy city, this park is definitely a relaxing area and can be compared to Central Park of New York.

8. Japanese neighbourhood (“liberdade”)

São Paulo has the biggest Japanese population outside Japan. In this Japanese neighbourhood, you really feel like you are in Japan. A walk through the streets and a lunch/dinner in a Japanese restaurant comes highly recommended.

9. District “Sé”/Old centre

A walk through the old city centre with the historic colonial buildings is very nice, and it is all around the “Sé Square” (Praça da Sé) with the Cathedral.
