Emirates launches swish Cape Town lounge

For us mere mortals boarding a plane means endless waiting, long queues and uncomfortable plastic seats. But for Emirates' top-end clients, its new premium lounge at Cape Town International Airport (CIA) adds another facet to luxury for which the airline is famed.

Future plans

The lounge is strategically located next to Emirates preferred departure gate. The plan is that when CIA’s runways are upgraded to accommodate the fleet’s behemoth A380 within the next few years, passengers will be able to walk straight from the lounge onto the aircraft.

Emirates currently operates two daily flights between Cape Town and Dubai, and launch a third daily service between the two cities on 4 July 2016.

New design concept

At a cost of US$2,89m, Cape Town is the airline’s 39th lounge in its network of over 150 global points, and showcases the Emirates’ new design concept.

The Arabian chic two-storey facility features Italian marble floors, leather armchairs and walnut wood finishes. The upper level of the lounge has a seating area with wraparound glass windows, where you can contemplate the planes coming and going, or devour the plethora of magazines on offer. There’s also a dining room with a very tasty menu served buffet-style, a second TV area, main restroom with showers, and a prayer room.

If you’re travelling for business rather than pleasure, there’s a fully equipped business centre with state-of-the-art touch screen workstations with free wifi.

“Emirates’ airport lounges are an integral part of our service and product offering for our premium and loyal customers. Our continuous investment in our airport services ensures we pay as much attention and focus on providing luxury and comfort on the ground as we do in the air,” said Mohammed Mattar, Emirates divisional senior vice president, airport services.

Add-on services

Emirates also offers its well-heeled customers a complimentary chauffeur service in Cape Town and dedicated check-in counters. “We expect to welcome approximately 65 to 70 premium customers on a daily basis at the lounge,” he added.

In addition to Cape Town, and the six lounges at its hub Dubai International Airport, Emirates also has dedicated lounges at Johannesburg, Auckland, Bangkok, Beijing, Birmingham, Brisbane, Colombo, Delhi, Dusseldorf, Frankfurt, Glasgow, Hamburg, Hong Kong, Istanbul, Kuala Lumpur, London Gatwick, London Heathrow, Los Angeles, Manchester, Melbourne, Milan, Munich, Narita, New York - JFK, Paris - Charles de Gaulle, Perth, Rome, San Francisco, Shanghai, Singapore, Sydney and Zurich, representing an investment of over US$350m.
