Hasbro brings joy to Tumelo Children Centre
Hasbro recently hosted its third annual Global Day of Joy, a day when the toy and board game company empowers all 5,000 of its employees to become 'elves' and engage in community service projects in 40 different countries.
This global volunteer day is one of many different initiatives Hasbro has in place to help children in need experience the joy of play and also to empower kids to share that same joy with others. During this holiday season alone, Hasbro expects to donate more than a half million toys and games to organisations benefiting children in need around the world.
As part of the Global Day of Joy initiative, the Hasbro South Africa team visited the Tumelo Children Centre in Ivory Park, Johannesburg, to spread some much needed festive cheer. The team, together with Santa and friends, distributed individually selected gifts to each child, and after lunch the rest of the visit was dedicated to the important business of playing games.
Very special day
"Our Global Day of Joy is a very special day to us because we all come together to make an impact in the lives of children by helping add some joy during this festive season," says Siphiwe Thabethe, marketing manager for Hasbro South Africa.
Hasbro believes that every child is born with the sparkle of hope in their eyes and sometimes, because of life's challenges, that hope has been diminished. Therefore, it is Hasbro's mission to assist these children in triumphing over their critical life obstacles and to bring the joy of play into their lives.
The Tumelo Children Centre was established in 1996 in Ivory Park. The home caters for children with physical and mental disabilities that range from mentally handicapped/retarded, orphaned, abused, abandoned or brought in by police. Currently the centre accommodates more than 40 children under the age of 16.
