Whitfield is a Bachelor of Journalism graduate from Rhodes University. He has won two Citadel awards for financial journalism.
He started his career as a general news reporter and duty editor at 702 in 1993. He then moved to London, freelanced at Reuters Radio News, London Broadcasting Corporation, before settling at Heart 106.2, a leading London commercial radio station as a newsreader and editor.
Whitfield returned to South Africa for a brief foray in serving news to community radio stations, before joining financial media company Moneyweb, where he was Banking Editor for three years. During his time at Moneyweb, Whitfield presented the Classic Business radio programme and wrote for their website. He also wrote for The Citizen and presented e-business on etv.
"Over the years, I gained much experience and have acquired a raft of skills which I intend to use to bolster business content across 702," said Whitfield.
Talk Radio 702's station manager, Yusuf Abramjee, welcomed Whitfield to the station. "He brings with him much experience and expertise. He will help to consolidate Talk Radio 702's position as 'Joburg's No1. news and information station."
During the drive-shows, there are regular business crossings. Major business and financial stories will also be covered in 702 Eyewitness News.
