Renewal of Protea Hotel by Marriott Walvis Bay under way

A refurbishment project at Protea Hotel by Marriott Walvis Bay, Namibia, owned by Frans Indongo Group, is under way. It is the first refurbishment of the hotel since it opened almost 20 years ago with the décor in the bedrooms, bathrooms, and the restaurant up for renewal.

Grant Januarie, the hotel’s general manager, explains: “We have taken a staggered approach to this project, which involves work on 26 rooms, so that the impact on our guests is kept to a minimum. At the moment, we are working on the first nine rooms, and this leg of the work should be completed by late December. Work on the remaining rooms will start on 12 January and the target date for conclusion of the work is the end of February next year, which means that our end-of-year tourist period this December and January will not be affected at all by the construction work.”

The two phases of the work are limited to the main building of the hotel only, which is the original building that the hotel launched with in 1997. Full services in the rest of the hotel continue as normal, and rooms in the other section of the property will undergo a similar refurbishment in November 2018.

“To restrict the impact of the work on our guests, work is being done only between 8am and 5pm,” Januarie says, “and there is no work being done on our conference facilities.”

The hotel enjoys a mix of both business and leisure travellers, with a predominance of guests visiting the area for business reasons.
