A record breaking winter for Airbnb South Africa

Airbnb welcomed 67,000 guests to South Africa this winter, an increase of 250% compared to last year. The record breaking winter for Airbnb in South Africa demonstrates the growing appeal of home sharing - both for summer tourists from the Northern hemisphere as well as for domestic travellers.

South Africans staying in Airbnb represent almost half of all guests (47%).

The majority of domestic guests are visiting Cape Town – followed by Johannesburg, Durban, Knysna and Port Elizabeth (in that order). And with almost 12,000 homes to choose from, Cape Town also is the most popular destination for travellers from outside of the country.

South Africans increasingly discover Airbnb as a great way to travel outside of the country, too with more than 32,000 South Africans have chosen to stay in someone else’s home while abroad - more than double the amount compared to last winter.
