Sun City denies strike claims

Sun International on Tuesday (27 August) denied a claim by the Congress of SA Trade Unions in the North West that workers were on strike at the Sun City resort.

Sun International spokesman Tamra Veley dismissed claims that workers would not report for duty. She said they were aware that members of Cosatu in the province had intentions to strike.

"Sun City is not on strike. We received notification of a strike from the union on Sunday (25 August) and we are writing to them asking for clarification," Veley said in a brief statement.

On Monday (26 August), Cosatu said workers were striking in support of several demands, including the dismissal of management members.

This came after management members allegedly ordered that two female workers accused of stealing R400 be stripped and searched by security guards, provincial secretary Solly Phetoe said.

He claimed that about half of workers were on strike on Monday (26 August) and that the action would intensify on Tuesday (27 August).

The workers were members of the SA Commercial Catering and Allied Workers' Union and the SA Transport and Allied Workers' Union.
