Drug Watch nets thousands

The Drug Watch initiative has led to 7,774 arrests during continued operations in the Gauteng province, the South African Police Service (SAPS) has announced.

"We have confiscated close to 350kg of illicit drugs that include Nyaope, Cocaine, CAT, LSD and Heroin. Operations are continuing and provincial police are committed to this collective effort to fight the scourge of drugs in the province," said Gauteng police spokesman, Brigadier Neville Malila.

Malila says police are following up on tip-offs received from the public.

"We urge members of the public to continue passing on information. We are particularly interested in information that could lead us to the king pins and especially manufacturers of drugs."

Drug Watch is a Lead SA and Crime Line initiative which was launched on 26 June, in partnership with the SAPS, Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) and the Gauteng Provincial Community Police Board.

Head of Crime Line and Lead SA activist, Yusuf Abramjee welcomed the news, saying: "Every kilogram of drugs off our streets is great news, but we need to close down the drug labs and make it very difficult for drug dealers and their bosses to operate. We appeal to the public to be our eyes and ears. The more detailed the information the better".

Drug Watch will in the coming weeks also focus intensely on drug dealing at night clubs and schools. The public has been urged to provide detailed information.
