Spoon, “a big film in a tiny film's body”

Inspired Minority Pictures (IMP) is working in partnership with creative media college, SAE Cape Town on the final synchronisation and mixing of the feature film, Spoon, which claims to be leading computer animation in South Africa.

Starring Golden Globe winning actor, Rutger Hauer, Spoon is currently in post production and is set to preview in 2010. Directed by Simon Hansen, Spoon is described as a supernatural thriller utilising over 400 special effects - more than most sci-fi films in Hollywood - and is claimed to be leading the computer animation revolution in South Africa. Hansen, also known for co-producing films with the lead actor of District 9, Sharlto Copley, is now being touted internationally as a rising star in feature film direction.

World-class creative training

The project commenced in July 2009 and five top audio students from SAE Institute, Cape Town, were tasked to assist with the edit, synchronisation and final mixing of Spoon. “We are proud to be involved in such a ground-breaking initiative, once again positioning SAE as a leading institution for world-class creative training,” commented SAE Institute manager, David Maclean. SAE has also assisted with the international short film produced by IMP, Pumzi.

“Spoon is a big film in a tiny film's body,” said director, Simon Hansen. “SAE assisted us to break the mould of what to expect on these low-budget productions and we were able to partner with SAE as a top-notch solution and elevate our film. We are so excited for people to see what we have done in collaboration with SAE. It would not otherwise have been possible.”

Workshops

Recently hosting workshops with Grammy award-winning engineers Vance Powell (Jack White, White Stripes, Alicia Keys, Buddy Guy) and Fabrice ‘Fab' Dupont (Toots & the Maytals, Bon Jovi, Avishai Cohen, Jennifer Lopez, Issac Hayes), SAE, Cape Town has added Hollywood foley artist, Michael Broomberg to its repertoire of internationally renowned college guest speakers.
