Cape Town City Ballet presents Giselle at the Baxter
The most popular of all Romantic ballets, this production was first mounted by David Poole in 1972 for the CAPAB Ballet Co, with the leading roles danced by Phyllis Spira, Eduard Greyling, Elizabeth Triegaardt and John Simons. Since then, it has been reproduced sixteen times in Cape Town, and also been seen in various venues around the country.
Adolphe Adam's music transports the viewer into the realm of fantasy and folklore and allows the dancers to interpret their story through glorious movement in solo and ensemble passages.
Making their debuts in the roles of Giselle and Albrecht at two sold-out matinees in Durban, Celeste George and Robin van Wyk thrilled the audiences with their emotional and sincere interpretations. They can be seen at three of the Baxter performances, while the other two will be danced by Lauren Rogers, a soloist and an emerging talent in the company, and Xola Putye, one of its leading male dancers and South Africa's aspiring danseur noble.
Dancing Myrtha, Queen of the Wilis, Angela Hansford and Janine Laidlow will repeat their Durban success in this forceful and demanding role, while the role of Hilarion will be taken by the CTCB's Character Principal Dancer, Mervyn Williams.
Booking is open at Computicket and ticket prices range from R70 to R100.
