Lioness kill wows The Daily Mail readers

On 19 October 2009 the online version of the UK newspaper, The Daily Mail, ran a series of photographs of a lioness attacking a buffalo in the midst of a convoy of cars. The photos drew out opposing viewpoints.

The series of photos was first posted to social media site Flickr by a user called “Mgdonny”.

Already the article has elicited more than 160 online comments from readers and web surfers who express a range of emotions and opinions. They range from “I can't believe nobody helped that poor buffalo”, to “Wow! These pictures are amazing! I wish I could have seen it!”

This article and series of pictures follows on other such amazing wild encounters in South Africa that have made international headlines: the Battle at Kruger (in which a pride of lions and a crocodile compete for a buffalo calf); and Battle of the Beasts (in which a leopard attacks and kills an adult crocodile). Each of these amazing natural scenes played out in South Africa's Kruger National Park.

Proud of our wilderness areas

Said Roshene Singh, CMO of South African Tourism: “We are proud of our precious and beautiful natural wilderness areas in South Africa, where people from all over the world may come to see these primeval and awesome displays of wild nature.

“South Africa offers pristine, unspoiled natural beauty and the wherewithal to enjoy that beauty in comfort with all the modern infrastructure demanded by experienced travellers. One can experience wildness in South Africa, whilst enjoying all the comforts one needs and demands.”
