So much more to see in South Africa

The eighth edition of the FIFA Confederations Cup is up and running, visitors to South Africa should not be restricted to the soccer stadiums only, as the country has several world-class tourist attractions, one of the most exciting being Constitution Hill in Johannesburg.

Situated at the site of the Old Fort Prison complex, on the outskirts of Hillbrow, Constitution Hill is one of the oldest remaining buildings in the rapidly changing landscape of the city of Johannesburg. It is not far from the City's host stadium, Coca Cola Park.

Virtually every important leader from Nelson Mandela, to Mahatma Gandhi and Albertina Sisulu as well as scores of ordinary South Africans caught up in the web of the apartheid regime, has been incarcerated at Constitution Hill.

You will be moved

The CEO of the Constitution Hill Trust, Dr Ivan May, described Constitution Hill as one of the country's best-kept secrets and said one that everyone should visit.

“This is an extremely important tourist site and it is also one of the country's best kept secrets. It's something that all South Africans and visitors to the country should put in their itinerary to visit. No one comes away unmoved,” said Dr May.

Today visitors to Constitution Hill can experience the unique way the South African transition has built hope for the future out of the pain of the past through various exhibitions and tours at the monument.

A tour of the Old Fort Prison complex is a celebration of the new era in South Africa. It takes visitors on a journey through from the country's painful past to its transition into a fully-fledged democracy.

Constitution Hill is now a major educational centre in Johannesburg where visitors learn in great detail about the injustices of the country's history. Visitors can also learn about human rights, democracy, and constitutionality and it also establishes a dialogue between communities, tourists, schools and media.
