Five horse riding destinations in Africa

There isn't anything quite like experiencing the exhilaration of horse power out in the open. Africa is a great part of the world to rediscover this pastime with many countries offering options to go on various horse riding incorporated tours and safaris. Below are five countries which offer an unforgettable horse riding experience.

Mozambique

Mozambique offers travellers the chance to combine both a safari and a beach holiday in one. Then horseback riding can be added to the experience too. Get the opportunity to become enthralled by the country’s diverse culture. Historical Portuguese ruins, ocean life in abundance and world class wildlife makes Mozambique a great place to embrace the spirit and freedom of horse riding.

Botswana

The Kalahari Desert, for which Botswana is famous, does not have any roads, so traversing this immense landscape by horse or flight might be the only way to venture through this charmed wildlife wonderland. Expect to travel through eternal savannahs and dunes, salt pans and momentary lakes, which seem to be here one day and gone the next. With Botswana slowly but surely becoming Africa’s most sought after wildlife destination, a Botswana safari will give you the opportunity to explore its wilderness.

Kenya

Get the chance to see and go to places that would often not be possible on foot or 4x4. Horse riding in Kenya is deemed to be an exhilarating experience as you get to traverse through landscapes which boast huge populations of wildebeest and a large variety of game and birds. You will also get the opportunity to experience the customs of the Masai Tribe, an African community which has largely kept its holistic approach to life even in modern day Kenya.

Namibia

Namibia is a desolate yet wonderfully interesting country visually, historically and culturally. Since the country is made up largely of desert, many areas are only accessible by horse. This makes it an ideal destination for long horse rides through parts of the Kalahari desert and the Namib desert that might make visitors feel that they have been transported to planet Mars.

My last days in magical #Kanaan in the South Namib desert were marked with a three hour game count on horseback with our fearless guide and researcher Karl (seen here riding Lisa and looking at a herd of Oryx through his binoculars). Tomorrow I head back to #Naankuse and civilisation followed by a quick tour of #Etosha National Park and the Skeleton Coast. I have such mixed emotions about leaving this wild and dramatic desert and the incredible #wildlife that live here. I've felt so at home in Kanaan and have loved every single moment of my stay from building haysheds and removing fences to doing game counts on horseback, hiking up mountains to look for the elusive spotted hyena and feeding the cheetahs. I will be back!. #travel #africa #namibia #horseriding #desert #adventure #namibdesert #wildlifephotographer

Tanzania

Tanzania really does have an amazingly diverse landscape to explore on horseback that simply won’t be possible to experience on a driving safari. Opting to go on a horse riding expedition in Tanzania will show you a new world of splendid wildlife and scenes of the most grueling mountain in all of Africa, Mt Kilimanjaro, which has captured the imagination of explorers for many years.
