“Fantastic turnout” for Sport Relief
Approximately 3 600 Capetonians took part in the first Sport Relief Mile in South Africa on Sunday, 21 March, 2010, joining fellow runners and walkers from across Great Britain in order to raise funds for Child Welfare South Africa.
Sport Relief, now in its ninth year in the UK, had the British public united in a weekend of fund-raising activities culminating in everyone, celebrities included, taking part in mile events all over the UK.
All ages and athletic abilities
Here in Cape Town, runners and walkers of all ages and athletic abilities chose from a 1 Mile (1.6 km), 3 Mile (4.8 km) or 5 Mile (8 km) route from the V&A Waterfront, taking in the beachfront promenade and the new Cape Town Stadium. It was a fantastic turnout for the inaugural event and was encouraging to see so many people celebrating Human Rights Day by giving back and making a difference in the lives of children in need.
Alan Shearer and Dame Kelly Holmes
UK football legend Alan Shearer and double-Olympic gold medalist Dame Kelly Holmes joined local presenter, Tammy-Anne Fortuin, at the Cape Town Mile where they presented all the local action for the two-hour BBC Entertainment Show that was flighted across Africa last night and gave people another opportunity to donate funds to CWSA.
Comic Relief UK's director of global strategy, Amanda Horton-Mastin, commented: “We are delighted to have been a part of this inaugural event in South Africa. It was very special to see so many people getting active to raise cash for the disadvantaged children supported by Child Welfare South Africa."
