Gibbs coaches kids, wins hearts

Proteas and Cape Cobras batsman Herschelle Gibbs has recently won the hearts of many children from Khayelitsha and Gugulethu by providing tips and coaching at the Sporting Chance Street Cricket League.

After five weeks of splendid cricket played on the streets of 12 regions around Cape Town, Gibbs provided the perfect motivation to the children who lined up wanting an autograph trademark on almost anything they could get their hands on.

“It is absolutely amazing to see the talent of the kids in these areas, and the right mentoring and coaching will see many of these cricketers further their careers in this wonderful game” said Gibbs.

Education a priority

Gibbs also encouraged all the children to make their education a priority. The format of Street Cricket lends itself to this philosophy with a policy that all players must attend school throughout the year in order to participate and at least two girls must be represented in each team.

“The only time you should be indoors is when you are at school and doing your homework, otherwise you must be outside playing cricket with your friends,” commented Gibbs who will be embarking on another trip around various impoverished areas tomorrow.

The sixth annual Sporting Chance Street Cricket League commenced in October and in association with Disney Enterprises, the City of Cape Town, various private donors and with media partners, Good Hope FM and Let's Play, has involved over 3000 participants competing in 12 regional championship areas.

On the eve of the third ODI between South Africa and England, on Thursday, 26 November 2009, Langa “the home of Street Cricket” will play host to the Western Cape Street Cricket finals where the 2009 Sporting Chance Street Cricket Champions will be crowned.
