Howard's recital programme traces a line between Beethoven's first attempt at breaking the mould of traditional sonata form, goes on to Schubert's trailblazing fantasy which has elements of four movements in one, then to the Liszt Sonata, Liszt having been inspired and encouraged by these very pieces to produce his single completed sonata, which is a single vast sonata form with internal elements of both a slow movement and a scherzo. So they are all cutting edge avant garde pieces, and yet they are also great audience favourites and have been from the beginning because of their powerful individuality and compelling thematic material.
The other concerts in the season are on 17 August, when the Arianna String Quartet returns by popular demand, to play Mozart, Shostakovich and Schubert; on 28 September when violinist David Juritz plays Elgar, Bach, Brahms and Szymanovski; on 26 October with Korean pianist Christopher Park; and on 16 November when Jerome Ducros (piano) and Jerome Pernoo (cello) make a welcome return in a programme of Bach, Ducros and Beethoven sonatas.
All performances take place at The Baxter Theatre. For more information, go to www.ctconcerts.co.za.
