Recognising special women

The search for South Africa's most inspiring and outstanding women in 2006 is underway: The Shoprite Checkers/SABC2 Woman of the Year Award this year celebrates its eleventh anniversary in a year that has special significance for South African women.

It is the 50th anniversary of the biggest mass-gathering of women in South Africa on 9 August 1956 when 20 000 women marched in silence to protest the carrying of passes.

The Shoprite Checkers/SABC 2 Woman of the Year Award has a special link to this memorable occasion. When Government decided to honour women every year on the anniversary of this day of great significance by announcing National Women's Day the Award was the first major initiative for the day.

In 2006 the Award is a prominent reminder of the distance that the women of South Africa have travelled over the years in order to reach their goals and make a difference to the fabric of our society.

The Award pays tribute to the most exceptional and achieving women in the country who have not only achieved success in their own respective fields but who have made a tangible difference in communities and society as a whole.

South Africans are invited to participate in the search by nominating the country's best in seven categories: business entrepreneurs, health, education, social welfare, arts, culture and communications, sport, and science and technology.

Each of the seven category winners of the 2006 Shoprite Checkers/SABC 2 Woman of the Year Award will receive R10 000 in prize money, while the overall winner will receive R30 000 in prize money.
