Book Project reaches thousands of learners

The Minki Book Project, launched with model Minki van der Westhuizen, You/Huisgenoot and kalahari.net in April to provide much needed books to schools, institutions and libraries that cannot afford to purchase their own books, has resulted in books being donated to 47 schools in the Eastern Cape.

The public reacted with so much enthusiasm that the project was able to donate books not only to one school, but to 47 schools in the Eastern Cape with this first donation. "I am so excited about our progress - imagine what a difference we can make by the end of October when phase one of the project ends. Seeing the reaction on the children's faces when they opened the boxes and when for the first time saw what the three little pigs look like, it was an eye-opening experience and makes me even more dedicated to this project," an excited Van der Westhuizen said.

Gary Hadfield, marketing manager of kalahari.net, commented: "Our main aim with this project is to encourage reading and a love for books. This objective really comes alive when you see the children with the books in their hands, in awe of the world that is opening in front of their eyes. We would really like to encourage people to continue donating books - please help us to be able to make donations like this every month."

Esmaré Weideman, editor of You and Huisgenoot, reiterates how important the written word is for education and that every single donation, even if it is only one book, will make a difference in at least one child's life. "If every child in this country can just have access to one book, we are making  real progress towards a bright future," she says.
