Corporate South Africa donates mobile kitchens, lanterns
Feeding children
Game handed over its 100th Amalunchbox mobile kitchen to 935 learners at Moriting Primary School in Tembisa, Johannesburg, marking its 100th kitchen installation. Each Amalunchbox container kitchen is fitted with a four-plate gas burner, a double bowl sink, stainless steel counters, shelving, four 100 litre cooking pots, serving spoons and enough tumblers, plates and spoons for every child.
Game's CEO, Jan Potgieter, said that the discount chain had invested about R6.5 million since it instituted the project in April 2008. However, the celebration also had to acknowledge the work of educators and volunteers who served up meals every day as well as the contribution of the Department of Education that oversees the National Schools Nutrition Programme.
He pointed out that research by the World Food Programme has proved that the provision of a hot cooked meal to undernourished children at schools not only provides more sustained energy but improves school attendance and increased classroom participation.
Lighting the way
Ugu South Coast Tourism, in conjunction with the local Department of Education, helped to identify three needy schools in the Ugu district on the KwaZulu Natal South Coast, all of which fall within the Vulamehlo Local Municipality. These impoverished schools have no electricity, so the donation of the battery-operated lanterns will assist children to study and provide a basic level of security.
Bukeka Zwezwe, GM of Tourism Development for Ugu South Coast Tourism, said, "Vulamehlo was recently identified as one of the top 20 vulnerable municipalities in South Africa and therefore there is a need for intervention, especially from the private sector. The lanterns will assist to brighten up the classrooms, especially since we are heading towards winter."
