Award-winning Afro design magazine celebrates African creativity

Daddy buy me a pony, the creative unit of the 9November Union of companies, successfully launched their own 'Afro' magazine during November 2003. Afro 2, the follow-up of Afro 1, is currently being designed by Peet Pienaar and Heidi Chisholm and will be available on-shelf the same time this year.

Afro Magazines are distributed internationally, and also nationally at selected Exclusive Books and Bread & Butter stores in Cape Town and Johannesburg.

Afro is a pan-African publication by Africans, and its main aim is to celebrate and highlight the best and most interesting creativity and designs on the entire African continent. This is also done to help shed the negative image of Africa which is all too often only associated with war, famine, Aids and other ailments.

Afro 1 won one Gold Clio Award in Miami and one Gold Award at The One Show Awards in New York, bringing 9November's total gold awards at the 2004 One Show Awards to two. The Afro 1 magazine was partly sponsored by De Grendel Wines, a 9November client and a new wine estate currently being established by Sir David Graaff on the slopes of the Tygerberg.

Charl Nel, managing director of 9November, commented: "Not only was the Afro project a creative, stimulating and rewarding exercise, especially for the creative partners of our company, but it also turned out to be a profitable project. By marketing our own product, it keeps us as an Agency close to the real world. This, in turn, helps us to stay pragmatic in our approach to our client's brands and the marketing of their products and brands."
