On 01 May 2003 the streets of Sandton will see "Big Issue" vendors selling the magazines to raise funds for themselves and their families, and as a special introductory offer, the cover price of the magazine will be reduced from R8.95 to just R5.00 a copy.
But, The Big Issue is more than just a magazine. By investing in a good read people are supporting a project that is helping unemployed people get off the streets and to start enhancing their lives with the help of training, counseling and support. The goal of the project is to reintegrate people into mainstream employment.
The Big Issue opened its doors in Cape Town five years ago and has helped over one hundred people back into mainstream employment and has put in excess of R2.5 million into vendors pockets.
So if you are driving through Sandton on Worker's Day, keep an eye out at traffic lights for "The Big Issue" vendors, and buy your copy. Not only will you get a jolly good read but you will help somebody feed their family and improve their life.
