Misty Hills becomes botanical gardens member

Misty Hill's private botanical gardens and arboretum, in Muldersdrift, near Joburg, have been awarded Botanic Gardens Conservation International membership. The hotel's gardens are planted largely with indigenous plants and trees to create a water-wise and environmentally friendly surrounding.

There are approximately 400 different varieties of southern African trees, shrubs, bulbs, ground covers, grasses, succulents and aquatic plants within the gardens and conserved areas. Cascading water features and abundant birdlife add to the country setting, making it easy to forget that the hotel is located only 15 minutes from Lanseria Airport and 25 km from Johannesburg City Centre.

Alien trees and plants removed

The hotel gardens were planted in 1990 when the property was bought and converted into a hotel, conference centre and spa. As part of the property conversion, most alien invasive trees and plants were removed and extensive indigenous landscapes were installed. By 2011 the gardens had grown to such an extent that it had achieved Botanical Garden status. Misty Hill's gardens not only create a beautiful environment for guests, but also educate visitors and guests about South African indigenous flora.
