Zululand Tourism to benefit from Ulundi Airport upgrade

The Ulundi airport was built as an international gateway to the Zulu kingdom and it boasts a 1750 meter long runway which can accommodate 737 jet airliners. The recent upgrade of the airport has brought the airport back up to world-class aviation standards in terms of safety and facilities. From March 2012, daily scheduled flights between Pietermaritzburg and Ulundi will be provided by Federal Airlines. An additional stop at Durban's Virginia airport and a Johannesburg leg will be introduced if there is sufficient demand. Bookings for the Ulundi flights can be made online at www.federalair.com.

The Ulundi airport's close proximity to the Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Park, the Emakhosini Opathe Heritage Park, and Zulu cultural-historic attractions make it an ideal entry and exit point for travellers on a limited time schedule. It takes 30 minutes for visitors to fly from Pietermaritzburg to Ulundi and it is only 36 kilometer by car on a tarred road to the Cengeni Gate of the Imfolozi section of the park which offers excellent game viewing.
