Table Mountain needs more votes

Table Mountain is still hoping to be listed as one of the 'new seven wonders' of the world but there are just days left for South Africans to put their weight behind Cape Town's bid to have the mountain listed, according to a report in The New Age.

It quotes Fiona Furey, campaign manager of New7wondersofnature.com as saying that there has been growing support for the campaign in recent weeks but Cape Town - and Table Mountain - needs even more votes to be included as one of the world's wonders.

The competition is run by the Switzerland-based New7Wonders Foundation that shortlisted 28 natural wonders around the world and challenged people to raise enough votes to ensure it is included in the final list.

Furey says that if Table Mountain receives the accolade as one of the seven wonders of nature, it would mean that 11 000 new jobs would be created and R1,4-billion would flow into the country through additional tourism initiatives.

The competition for Table Mountain is tough, considering that other sites include the Amazon, Mount Kilimanjaro and the Grand Canyon.
