Organised by the boss of African Fashion International, Precious Moloi-Motsepe, it will include the work of local designers and fashion houses such as David Tlale, Thula Sindi, Craig Jacobs of Fundudzi, and Kluk CGDT.

There will be presentations from Ghana, Nigeria, Mozambique, Madagascar, Cameroon and Ethiopia.

Tlale said: “I am looking forward to seeing the Egyptian designer Soucha and some of the Nigerian designers.”

Nduka Obaigbena, editor of Arise magazine, which is sponsoring the week-long show together with Joburg Tourism, said he believed the fashion week would attract world audience and markets beyond the African diaspora.

The Times fashion columnist, Jacquie Myburgh, said it was a great opportunity for South Africa to shine: “We make a great impression in sports and African Fashion Week will make us shine as well.”
