Afrikaans breaking news site launches

24.com today, Wednesday, 12 August 2009, launched Nuus24.com, the Afrikaans version of online breaking news site News24com. The new site will follow News24's tried and tested formula of publishing breaking news and giving a voice to its growing community.

“Nuus24 is uniquely placed in the market with a focus on national news for an Afrikaans audience,” explains Nuus24 and News24 editor Jannie Momberg.

“We launched News24 11 years ago. Since then, the site's functionality and content has evolved and today is a multifaceted digital platform that meets the needs of South Africans living an on-demand lifestyle. We expect Nuus24 to follow suit.”

While the two sites share an editor, Nuus24 has its own newsroom. “The diverse Afrikaans speaking community has its own issues and wealth of stories - all of which make for good online conversation,” says Momberg.

The business news - a selection of the best local, international, sport, technology and entertainment news aggregated from across the web - is supplied by the Sake24 team responsible for Media24 newspapers' business news.

Nuus24 will also include an Afrikaans version of the popular citizen journalism portal, MyNews24, allowing users to upload photos, video clips and blog or post comments.

The launch follows on the back of sister site News24 tipping the 1. 2 million unique users mark, as measured by Nielsen Online Market Intelligence (MI) in July 2009.
