The number of consumers with bad debts has increased, the National Credit Regulator (NCR) said on Sunday, 12 July 2009.
Quarter-on-quarter consumers with “impaired records” grew by 160,000 while year-on-year the number increased to 870,000.
As at March this year, credit bureaus had records for 17,61 million credit-active consumers, the NCR said.
The data showed that the percentage of consumers in good standing was 57.6% at the quarter ending March.
This was a decrease of 0.8% compared with the quarter ending December 2008 and a decrease of 4% compared with the quarter ending March last year.
In the March quarter, the total number of inquiries made on consumer credit records was 99,93 million. This was a decrease of 3.1% from the previous quarter and a decrease of 8.2% year- on-year.
Of the total inquiries made on consumer records, inquiries from banks accounted for 38.3% and inquiries from retailers accounted for 22.4%, the data showed.
In the quarter ending March, 8370 disputes were lodged by consumers relating to the accuracy of the credit information on their credit records.
This was a decrease of 7.2% quarter-on-quarter and a decrease of 33.8% year-on-year.
The number of credit reports issued to consumers had decreased in the quarter ending March.
