Dropbox to drop Mailbox and Carousel
Mailbox will close on 26 February 2016, while Carousel will shut down a month later on 31 March, the month-long wait is for photo data to be moved over to Dropbox.
After a lack of response and app updates, the move to shut them down was in the works, reports TechCrunch. Even though Dropbox has 400 million users, it still faces doubts from investors, their obviously feeling the pressure.
Mailbox was launched to high expectations in 2013 and was bought from company Orchestra by Dropbox for $100m. An app to streamline your emails and easily archive them sounded like a promising strategy, but it seems as though Dropbox need to focus on their core product - file storage.
Carousel, the photo app for all your images from Dropbox, also showed a lot of promise and was a result of several mobile acquisitions.
Dropbox is reportedly valued at an estimated $10bn, but is facing some tight competition from Box - which is valued at $1.7bn, according to Wired. It seems Dropbox will be putting more emphasis on their Google Doc-like service, Paper.

The news was met with scrutiny and sadness by Twitter users:
Can you imagine that instead of killing Mailbox, Dropbox let their original team leave (if they wanted) and take Mailbox with them?

Can't believe @Dropbox are killing Mailbox.... the one piece of software I actually liked and thought was really good..

...we sold a company to Dropbox earlier this year so I've got a bit of insight into what that team is working on. Exciting stuff ahead!
