POI dancing and a little Brinkmanship
NEWSWATCH: André P Brink, who miffed the apartheid government, says the Protection of Information (POI) Bill must rank as the stupidest thing the ANC government has ever done - "and that says a lot", reports News24. Meanwhile, the proposed bill is attracting attention beyond South Africa's borders, with Voice of America reporting on opposition to the measure. Finally, our old favourite, the SABC is being slammed, again, and this time it's the voice of Godi, reports Business Day. And a last one... Last week the The New Age didn't launch... Moneyweb apparently has an insider's view.
For more:
- News24: Info bill the stupidest thing - Brink... Many would agree with Brink when he says the Protection of Information (PoI) bill is the stupidest thing the present government has done. But, as Napoleon said, "In politics, stupidity is not an impediment" and measures such as the POI are pretty good proof old Napoleon Blownapart knew what he was talking about. Now start the countdown for Brink to be pilloried by Pallo, or someone...
- Voice of America: South Africans Organizing Against Government Secrecy Bill... Now hear this, when SA falls in the world's press freedom rankings and organisations such as the VoA picks up on opposition to media gags such as the POI, those in government should get a wake-up call - but will they? Naah... probably not.
- Business Day: SABC under fire for failing to tighten control... Scopa chairman Themba Godi says the committee gets the impression that line managers are not being held to account by either the board or 'political leadership'. So what else is new?
- Moneyweb: The New Age: A story from the inside... Here's the story of the launch that sank... a blow-by-blow account of the sorry saga from an insider.
