Record number of entries for 'thinkahead' awards

The South African Graphik Design Council, think, received a record number of entries from 208 final year students of graphic design for its 2004 'thinkahead' Awards. These students represent 19 accredited training institutions - university faculties, technikons and private training colleges - throughout South Africa.

Veejay Archary, Chairman of the Board of Directors of think was delighted, "This is a 50% increase on last year's entry total. think and its primary sponsor, Sappi Fine Paper, have watched with great pleasure as the programme grew in just three years to be a truly significant factor in the career paths of South Africa's graphic design students."

The adjudication process took two days to complete and resulted in awards being made in the full portfolio section, as well as 13 individual categories.

"The quality of the work continues to improve. The cooperation between the academic sector and the professional sector through the medium of this programme is excellent," says Archary. "Together we are working to smooth the gap between study and practice which can be a pretty bumpy experience for new graduates."

On 16 November, think members, students, lecturers and guests from many allied organisations and firms will come together for the awards ceremony, which has become an important fixture in the industry. They will honour the winners who will receive recognition for their talent but also some fine prizes from event sponsors Core Group, Adobe, Design Indaba, Affinity Publishers, Soviet Jeans and Red Square.
