This programme identifies and develops undiscovered creative individuals in the architecture, advertising, craft, décor, film, fashion, graphic design, interior, jewellery, new media, publishing, product design and visual arts sectors.
The Design Indaba Expo shows off the best of local design - original, contemporary and innovative product that is quintessentially South African, so emerging creatives whose work is chosen will share the expo floor with trendsetters in all spheres of design.
They will also have their work exhibited and showed off to local and international media, design specialists and experts from the international design fraternity - all of this while being exposed to various future job prospects. Selected emerging creatives also receive tailor-made business cards to distribute at the expo.
The Design Indaba Expo Curator Panel looks to both tertiary institutions and the creative industry when screening submissions to the programme. Heads of department of various institutions within South Africa have been approached to submit work of their top three to five final-year students.
The Design Indaba Expo team also keeps an eye on the industry and extensive research is undertaken to identify potential emerging talent leads.
Once all submissions are received, each creatives work, along with a score sheet, is submitted to the relevant curator panel member/s, which consists of designers and opinion makers in the creative industry. The work of the potential emerging creatives will be delivered to each of these curator panel members who will view the work and make a decision based on popular vote. The Curator Panel Members then send through their recommendation and the final selection of 48 is made.
