Call to enter 2010 D&AD
The call to enter the 2010 D&AD Awards and the 23 jury foremen were announced yesterday, Monday, 19 October 2009. Network# BBDO Johannesburg's Mike Schalit will lead the Radio Advertising jury.
The awards recognise the best work in advertising and design from around the world with their legendary Yellow and Black Pencils. Juries will be announced from early November.
“It's always difficult to choose a Pencil. It's equally difficult choosing the foremen. But we've done it,” said D&AD president Paul Brazier. “These foremen are more than qualified to do this job. They are specialists in their chosen field and will be tough enough to make sure that work gets judged with the utmost integrity.”
He continued, “Sometimes it's easy for judges to be conservative and not give an award. It's often braver to stick your neck out and reward something challenging, fresh or new. These foremen are the very first steps to shaping the 2010 Awards.”
“Hmm, I've always rather liked being a Radiohead,” quipped Schalit. “Ok, on a less melodic note, it's kinda scary to be the first South African to head up a D&AD panel. But given that radio has often been the medium for our li'l country down yonder, bottom of Afrika [sic] to outpunch its weight against the bigger markets, I guess it's payback time. Can't wait to see how the best of global work stacks up. The D&AD mantle of originality and craft defies the dank staleness of ‘radioland' so a blast of fresh air would be rather welcome, oxygen-laced please.”
