Great Pretenders take Roxy down memory lane

A must for anyone who enjoyed the old Las Vegas hits, the Great Pretenders pay tribute to the old Cape Town District Six musicians and expertly capture the rich harmonies and powerful solos of the medley of international hits, like Elvis's Blue Suede Shoes, Shirley Bassey's This Is My Life, Tina Turner's Proud Mary and many other wonderful songs.

Jayson King (you would never say he is 65!) is very polished, energetic and vibrant, with an amazing voice and great dancing.

Jacques Hector Smit and Terry Smith contribute to the great harmonies and the Great Pretender Girls, with their brilliant voice co-ordination, glitzy costumes and energy were amazing.

The Supremes, Conettes, Dixie Cups and Cher all come back to life. The costumes, all designed by Jayson King were fantastic.

The band members were also excellent musicians and really enjoyed themselves. It was wonderful to find out there was such talent, right in our midst. The show started well and got better and better!

After the show, we moved on from The Roxy to the Jackson Hall, where the Jazz Competition was in process. It was very well attended, with a crowd watching various singers and again, great local talent presented itself.

This was the first of what could be an enjoyable Wednesday evening talent show at Jackson's Hall, Grand West. A great idea!

The Great Pretenders will take you on a nostalgic trip down memory lane when they perform at Grand West's Roxy Revue Bar between 8 October and 14 November, 2009. The show starts at 8.30pm and tickets cost R67 from Computicket.
