Zuru's latest collectible range, Nook Nooks by StarBox hits SA

The global blind box trend is moving further into lifestyle territory, with Zuru bringing its latest collectible range, Nook Nooks by StarBox, to South Africa as demand grows for products that combine surprise, collectability and display appeal.

Unlike traditional blind box products centred primarily on individual characters, Nook Nooks creates miniature environments. Each box contains an animal character, a themed household nook, miniature furniture and accessories, as well as a working LED light.

The positioning reflects a broader shift in collectible culture, where products are increasingly designed not only to be opened and collected, but also displayed and shared across social platforms.

From mystery toy to lifestyle collectible

The concept has already gained traction in the US. Following an early launch at Target, Nook Nooks became the retailer's top-selling product across its POP category, which covers blind box and fandom products.

The range achieved this despite initially being stocked in around 500 stores across Target's national network.

According to Sabina Hujdurovic, marketing manager APAC, Middle East & Africa at Zuru, the performance has also been amplified by collector content, including unboxing videos, rare finds and display collections shared on social media.

“The timing couldn't be better as the global blind box phenomenon evolves beyond children's toys,” says Hujdurovic.

“Adults are now one of the fastest-growing consumer groups in collectibles. Social media has transformed surprise toys into display-worthy lifestyle pieces, where beautifully designed miniatures are showcased on desks, bookshelves and collector walls just as often as they're played with.”

For retailers and brands, that shift expands the potential market beyond children and traditional toy purchasing occasions, bringing collectibles into areas such as fandom, décor, social content and adult consumer culture.

Building miniature worlds

Nook Nooks is designed around the idea of collecting environments rather than simply accumulating characters.

Each box contains one of six designs, plus the possibility of discovering a super-rare collectible. The miniature rooms can be combined with other Nook Nooks to create larger displays and neighbourhoods.

“Rather than collecting characters alone, collectors build tiny illuminated worlds,” says Hujdurovic.

The format also creates a built-in repeat-purchase dynamic, with consumers encouraged to collect multiple designs and discover the rarer items within the range.

“Consumers aren't simply buying collectibles anymore; they're looking for beautifully designed pieces that tell a story, spark conversation and deserve a permanent place on display,” she says.

Zuru expands its collectible proposition

Nook Nooks is the debut collection under StarBox, Zuru's new collectible brand, positioning the range as part of a broader move into premium blind box experiences.

For Zuru, the opportunity extends beyond the traditional toy aisle as collectible products increasingly intersect with social media, fandom and lifestyle retail.

“The launch of Nook Nooks signals the beginning of a new generation of blind box experiences that blend premium design, craftsmanship and social-first collectability,” says Hujdurovic.

Nook Nooks is now launching in South Africa through leading retailers nationwide at R499 per box, giving local consumers access to a global collectible trend that is increasingly being shaped by adult collectors and online communities.
