Leopard Sands Kruger Park has joined Marriott International’s Autograph Collection, becoming the brand’s first safari lodge in South Africa.

The 18-suite lodge is located on the banks of the Sabie River just outside Kruger National Park near Paul Kruger Gate, and combines twice-daily game drives with experiences focused on the region’s wildlife, history and neighbouring Tsonga communities.
Inspired by the XiTsonga phrase garingani wa garingani (“let me tell you a story”), the lodge incorporates local cultural references into its accommodation, dining and guest activities.
First safari lodge in SA
Leopard Sands overlooks the Sabie River and the Kruger National Park beyond, with the river attracting wildlife including elephant, buffalo, hippo, crocodile and a range of bird species.
The 18 standalone suites each have a private plunge pool, indoor and outdoor showers and a freestanding bathtub.

The interiors were designed by Varoom Interiors and Delta Designs, using natural stone, timber, woven textures, handcrafted furnishings and locally produced artworks.
A collection of leopard photographs by Safraaz Suliman, one of the lodge’s founding directors, features throughout the property.

Tsonga heritage shapes stay
The lodge includes a river-facing lounge and viewing deck, an infinity pool, fitness centre and boutique.
At its Library Corner, guests can find books covering Kruger National Park’s wildlife, history and people, along with a journal for visitors to record their experiences.
The lodge also hosts Boma evenings featuring traditional braais, local music, dance and storytelling.

At the Ndlopfu restaurant, the menu includes regional dishes such as oxtail potjie served with tihove, a traditional Tsonga accompaniment.
Cocktails and mocktails include ingredients such as marula fruit harvested on the property.
Safari beyond game drives
Twice-daily game drives into Kruger National Park form part of the lodge’s offering, with optional experiences including scenic flights over the Blyde River Canyon, guided tours of the Panorama Route, visits to wildlife rehabilitation centres and rounds at Skukuza Golf Club.
The lodge also offers private in-room spa treatments and weekly silent outdoor cinema screenings.

Local community supports lodge
Leopard Sands operates on land leased from the neighbouring Belfast Trust community.
Approximately 95% of its employees come from the local community, while the lodge said it sources goods and services from local businesses, suppliers and producers where possible.
The lodge is located near Skukuza Airport, approximately a one-hour flight or five-hour drive from Johannesburg.
