The drama never stops

So last week we experienced the culmination of the Chile mine rescue drama, an incredible feel-good story that surpassed all expectations in the end. That's certainly going to go down as one of the news events of the year, if not recorded history.

This week, as part of the Right2Know Week of Action campaign, 19-27 October 2010, we've got National Press Freedom Day tomorrow, Tuesday 19 October, which commemorates Black Wednesday, a day on which three newspapers - The World, Weekend World, and Pro Veritate - were banned alongside 19 black organisations and scores of critics detained by the apartheid regime in 1977. This year, the commemoration is even more poignant, thanks to the current ongoing fight for media freedom. Various activations and seminars have been planned for tomorrow and at least we start off the week with what appears to be some positive news from the SANEF/Government meeting this past weekend in Magaliesburg.

Then, there's the annual PRISA national conference taking place 20-21 October at Gold Reef City in Johannesburg. The theme for this year is Africa on Top and the conference will look at how public relations can effect positive change in organisations, the commercial environment and the continent. There's also Tony Koenderman's Brainstorm on Thursday 21 October, which could be a cracker with its exploration of the future of advertising through various speakers and a panel debate.

A big announcement today is the restructuring of 24.com (again) with immediate effect to become "a very focused online publishing business that can work more closely with the group's print publishing divisions", falling within Media24 Newspapers (this time). Coincidentally, Bizcommunity.com has been told, towards the end of last week 24.com (which centres on News24.com) began rolling out a new logo set for its properties, which has been met with mixed reactions.

And, in case you've missed it, there's a new kid on the cell block, Telkom's 8ta, so adding to all the noise over Cell C's rebranding campaign is the fuss over the new mobile operator's Heita teaser campaign, branding and impact on Internet costs in South Africa...

A luta continua!

Managing editor

PS In this week's Ornico Ad Showcase, we feature TV ads for Dentyne White, Vodacom, Wimpy, City Lodge and Nestlé Ice Ceam, and radio ads for BP Express, Cadbury, Subaru, Cell C and Nativa.

Please send all marketing and media news to marketingnews@bizcommunity.com and opinion pieces to contributors@bizcommunity.com. Responses to this column welcomed in our online editor's column archive.

SA media tribunal wars: is that an armistice we see?
[Stephen Grootes: @StephenGrootes] A joint indaba between the South African National Editors' Forum (SANEF) and Government this past weekend yielded some surprising results - the most important of them being a call by the deputy president for cooler heads. Silent march reminds that press freedom is constitutional
Marchers with their mouths taped shut will take part in a silent march, as part of the Right2Know campaign, supported by the Freedom of Expression Institute and the South African History Archive, to make the objections to the Protection of Information Bill visible and commemorate Black Wednesday - 19 October 1977 - when three newspapers were closed, 17 political organisations banned and many activists arrested. Brands and branding in the Twitter environment

Print media's big digital decision
[Chris Moerdyk: @chrismoerdyk] South Africa's print media are in the same boat as their global counterparts by having to make a very big decision on whether to give their digital content away for free or sell it. Both strategies have their merits and, when the push comes to a decision-making shove, the best route to take will probably depend on the audit rules of the country in which a medium is operating. Email marketing wins sales awards, not Loeries
[Cordell Brewer] Two things, in particular, stand out when it comes to email marketing. The first is that it offers the highest return on investment (ROI) of all tools available to the marketer, according to a study commissioned by the US Direct Marketing Association. The second is that the amount of money spent on email marketing is a pittance, which is rather puzzling, considering the indisputable fact above. Read more >>

Travel
Two-in-one luxury on Pepper & Loop

BizLounge
A rollicking Raiders of the Lost Aardvark
[Michael Britton] During World War 2, an intrepid, almost blind airplane mechanic with a heart murmur so loud you can hear it across the street, flies a cranky biplane from Cape Town to Cairo. The original mission - to deliver documents to Walvis Bay - becomes a madcap adventure as our unlikely hero, Salty Hepburn, pursues a suspicious tramp steamer and double agents across Africa. En route he encounters flamingos, mielie fields, gorillas and a wicked German baron. Read more >>

Whirling dervish transforms Carmen
[Debbie Hathway] Dada Masilo had the audience roaring with delight by her second entrance in her contemporary dance version of Carmen at the Baxter Theatre last week.
